The Beginning
The history of my family started with my aunt Ceci, my mom’s older sister, who moved to San Diego eight years before my mom. When my mom graduated from college, she wanted to take a little break and discover something new before she started her professional career. So she decided to spend six months in San Diego living with her sister and learning some English.
During that time, she went to school daily taking ESL courses. She met lots of different people, made friends and among them, my dad, who had already been here in San Diego six years. They began dating.
My dad’s journey to San Diego began when his aunt invited him to do his Senior year of High School in San Diego. His plan was to stay just for one year and then go back to his home country, Spain. He changed his mind and decided to stay and attend Grossmont College. After a couple of years living with his aunt he moved in with a friend.
When my mom’s six months were up, she went back to her hometown, Guadalajara. Christmas was coming up, so my mom invited my dad to spend the holidays with her family. They were together traveling for a couple of weeks in Mexico like butterflies, with no plan just pure joy. Then they decided to move in together back in San Diego. After one ½ years of living together, my dad proposed to my mom. One year after, they were married.
While they were married, they lived in Mission Beach. My dad worked as a bartender/ bar manager in a local nightclub and my mom worked for an airline. With my dad pursuing his dream of owning his own restaurant, he continued to work until he mustered up all he had and bought a building, this old, broken apart building, where now stands Costa Brava.
